The benefits of dairy
As part of a healthy, balanced diet, the Department of Health and Children recommend three portions of dairy foods per day for children. The recommended dietary allowance for calcium increases during the teenage years (11-17 yrs). Therefore, it is advisable that teenagers consume up to five portions of dairy per day.
One portion is equivalent to 189 ml of milk (one carton of School Milk approx.), a carton of yogurt or 28g of hard cheese.
A portion of School Milk provides an array of nutrients including protein, calcium, phosphorous and vitamins B2 and B12. As part of a balanced diet, protein, calcium and phosphorus are needed for normal growth and development of bone in children.
Results from national surveys have revealed inadequate intakes of certain vitamins and minerals among Irish children and teenagers. For example, 37% and 28% of girls and boys (9-12 yrs) respectively, and 42% and 23% of teenage girls and boys (13-17 yrs) respectively, had inadequate calcium intakes.
Milk and dairy foods are among the best dietary sources of calcium. Eating the recommended intake of dairy each day may help you meet your nutritional requirements for a number of essential nutrients – calcium in particular.
A healthy, balanced diet and an active lifestyle are essential at all stages of life including childhood and the teenage years.
