School Milk Refrigeration

At The National Dairy Council we are committed to ensuring that your pupils enjoy milk at its freshest at all times. That’s why, in association with your local dairy, we have a limited number of free fridges and cooler bags available to schools that require storage facilities for School Milk. When your school registers for the School Milk Scheme, a fridge will be ordered, delivered and installed directly in the school free of charge. Cooler-bags are used to assist schools that receive early morning deliveries before the school opens and are convenient for storing milk in classrooms for a short period of time.

Keeping your School Milk Fridge Clean

  • Clean the School Milk fridge regularly, paying particular attention to the handle, shelves and storage compartments.
  • Wash all surfaces thoroughly with warm, soapy water, then rinse them clean.
  • Dry surfaces thoroughly with a clean towel or kitchen roll.
  • Wipe up any School Milk spills straightaway.
  • Never use cleaning products that may leave a taste in food or damage the fridge.

Some helpful tips for refrigeration and rotation of School Milk

  • Keep the temperature of your School Milk fridge at 5°C or below.
  • Before inserting the most recent delivery of milk in the School Milk Fridge, always check the ‘use by’ date, ensuring that cartons or bottles are rotated, with ‘older’ cartons or bottles placed to the front of the fridge.
  • Check the School Milk fridge daily for cartons or bottles that have passed the ‘use by’ date and throw them out.
  • Don’t overpack the School Milk fridge, as this can stop cool air from circulating freely and the fridge may not keep the foods properly chilled.
  • Keep the School Milk fridge door closed tightly, as the temperature will rise if the door is left open.
  • School Milk cartons or bottles should only be taken out of the fridge ten minutes before they are distributed for consumption. Milk should be kept out of direct sunlight and in a cool area during this time.
